Chicken or the Egg, Canterbury

Chicken or the Egg is a relatively new cafe that has opened in Canterbury on the popular shopping strip of Maling Road, a five minute walk to Canterbury Station on the Belgrave/Lilydale lines and five minute drive from the heart of Camberwell. We had actually come from the Sunday Market, wanting to find something close by that we didn't have to wait too long for a table for.

The cafe feels very open and spacious, and there's plenty of seating both inside and out. The white walls and simple decor, together with the old looking wooden tables, give the whole place a homely and comfortable atmosphere, that was quite busy with people the whole time we were there on a Sunday afternoon. The staff were friendly and attentive, though there was about a 25 minute wait for our food. Breakfast and lunch are both served all day, and there's a good range of sweet and savoury options as well as a cabinet at the front of sweet goodies.

The dishes we ordered were the baked eggs ($18.90) and the waffle chicken ($22.90), as well as a Guatemalan blend soy latte ($4.30). The coffee flavour was strong but not overpowering, and it was richer and heavier than your typical coffee, though without an acidic aftertaste which was really enjoyable. The coffee also came with a descriptive card of info regarding the source of the coffee, which was really great.

The baked spanish eggs came with housemade chorizo, capsicum and tomato salsa, topped with melted manchego cheese and herbed toast. The saltiness of the chorizo mixed well with the acidic tomato and capsicum salsa for a great combination of flavours, and the egg yolks in the dish were runny when cut into. The herbed bread on the side came in small strips and were really crunchy and thin. It was a little hard to absorb the tomato goodness because of this, but nonetheless still a really enjoyable dish even though at first glance it doesn't look like a very large portion.

The waffle chicken consisted of Southern Style chicken with waffles, a beetroot puree, radish, fried egg and a spiced strawberry mayo. Waffle and chicken is a surprisingly good combination and a really good balance of sweet and savoury for when you can't decide which you want to go with! The chicken was cooked perfectly and not oily or dry, and complimented the natural sweetness of the waffles well without being overpowering. The spicy strawberry mayo added a hint of acidity to the dish and bought it together really nicely, and the crunch of the chicken with the softness of the waffle made for a really great dish.

I had a really great experience at Chicken or the Egg and would definitely recommend coming here for brunch!
